Seems a good time to give some assessment of President Biden’s work so far since he has been inaugurated. Please note this post involves only his performance as president, and nothing earlier or other personality traits. Also, this is not an exhaustive list, only some highlights… and low-lights. Those will (probably) be addressed in the future. So let’s get to it…
Economy: He’s been fine. Given that addressing covid directly affects the economy he has done well to get things back on track, in spite of efforts by opponents to thwart said covid success… somewhat effectively, unfortunately. Gas prices have pretty much nothing to do with the sitting president, good or bad regardless who the person is. Yes, we have inflation, but we’re also recovering from an unprecedented economic environment where everything is turned upside down that precedes his election. I do have concerns with the money he wants to spend, but let’s be real… “deficits don’t matter”… somebody on the right said that and meant it. (This last part is somewhat facetious to make the point.)
Afghanistan: Not perfect, but really and honestly as good or better as could be expected given the Taliban were involved and how he was set up for failure by others. Really, he’s the first person who went beyond empty talk and rhetoric and actually got us out and with minimal harm. No harm is not a reasonable or realistic expectation and no one would have been able to pull that off. It totally baffles me how any objective person could slam him for the Afghanistan withdrawal, but I talked about that last month, also.
Covid: Actually, very good. He’s doing his honest best to do as much for the overall good as possible. See “Economy” above, too.
Illegal Immigration: Absolute, unmitigated, failure. While it was never said explicitly, the tone from the administration from Day One was, “C’mon in!”, and it was heard loud and clear far and wide. This is an area I agree with the intent of the previous administration, albeit not their methods. We need to be tougher an illegal immigration. I agree with the Supreme Court re-instating the “Remain in Mexico” policy. I do have a post regarding my overall view on immigration if you’re interested.
Police reform: So far, zero. I have seen pretty much nothing from him, and to be honest I do not expect anything from him. Both Biden and VP Harris built their careers on “tough on crime”. That’s who they are and I don’t see either of them changing regardless what they said during the campaign.
Infrastructure: Don’t get me wrong, after being continually promised and neglected for administration after administration, I’m am very happy something is finally being done. But “infrastructure” is clearly defined as roads, bridges, utilities, and so on. I would also add internet because the internet and wifi will be to the 21st century what the interstate highway system was to the 20th century. Everything will grow via the internet and wifi. Infrastructure is not child care, housing, etc. There is no such thing as “soft infrastructure”. Stop making stuff up.
That’s pretty much it. So, what would be my score be? On a scale of 1 to 10, one being abysmal and 10 being perfect… Without the Afghanistan withdrawal I’d give him a 6. With the Afghanistan withdrawal I give him a 7.5. Pulling that off as well as was done is worthy of an extra point.
Note: I’m all good if you want to disagree with me in the comments, just make sure to provide mature counterpoints and your own conclusions, not character assassination or empty dismissal.
