I can honestly state that I have never unfriended a person on Facebook over politics. I have unfriended people who may have been an ass, and I’ve unfriended many people whom I simply never interact with, but never over politics. Now, I have considered a few, just never done it.
Today I had someone unfriend me over politics. At least that’s all I can think it was. This person is one I had considered unfriending since about October, 2020. We were friends and got along well in two different forums for over 16-ish years. They are a Trump supporter, and that’s fine, I don’t mind that. But in the last six or so months they’ve latched onto the most absurd crackpot QAnon conspiracy theories, to the point they became obsessed and something of a crackpot them self. I had “snoozed” them for 30 days back in November, and I suspect they “snoozed” and/or unfollowed me around the same time, and today came the final deed.
Am I upset? No. Another friend told me I’m not missing anything, and considering the lunatic right fringe crap, said friend is probably correct. What saddens me is the loss of a good person who was reasonable to talk to on other subjects. The cult appeal is truly bizarre. Donald Trump, Jim Jones, and so on, how do people get suckered in to obvious lying crap?
It’s no secret I’ve been challenging Trump and his supporters pretty steadily, but after yesterday’s insurrection I no longer have any patience. If you’re going to defend that dolt of a con man I’m going to call you out on it, and make no apologies. You are free to challenge me, too, of course. Just don’t come at me with the same old lying talking points with no substance or sources. In other words, put up or shut up.
A question I’ve been asking for a couple years now: People say we need to stop the partisanship and get along better. I agree with that wholeheartedly. It would certainly be the responsible and correct thing to do. No more “party over country”. So the question is: Who’s going to start?
Unfortunately, I fear we’re stuck with the juvenile partisanship for awhile, but that’s a topic for another post.
Cheers. 🙂
