I often see it mentioned that people who oppose abortion, yet are not adopting kids… at least one… are hypocrites. The implication, of course, is that the person who supposedly cares so much about kids would “walk the walk” and have at least one adopted kid that they ‘saved’ from death. The accusation is ‘put up or shut up’, right? Ok, not a wholly unfair point. Not really practical, certainly hyperbolic, but not wholly so.
Now, let’s be fair and consistent and see how many people hold up.
We’ll take it the logical step further. How many people who have railed against other people’s conservative views against illegal immigration have offered to take an unknown illegal immigrant or refugee… or better yet, a family with innocent children… into their home themselves? Answer the question. How many would do so? Would you do it?
Hey, fair is fair.
I’d bet the numbers would be pretty darn small. Probably about the same as the numbers of people who would adopt a kid to ‘save’ it from abortion. Imagine that!
Here’s where the hypocrisy comes in. It’s only a good idea when somebody else has to do the literal ‘dirty work’? We’ve devolved to the point that we only see our own points-of-view as righteous and noble, and opposing points-of-view as selfish and mean spirited.
Coming from the center, this is why I see conservatives/Republicans and liberals/Democrats as essentially the same. The attitude and commitment is the same, only the topic differs.
